Despite the economic crisis, one area that seems to be thriving is in being eco-friendly. While other companies are forced into lay-offs, bankruptcy, and even closing their doors forever, people in the green industry are enjoying career success. If you’re looking to get into an environmental job, you may not know where to look. You may have some idea of what it means to have an environmental job, but where do you turn to get one?Environmental jobs no longer mean working outside. You don’t have to be in parks cleaning up trash to have an environmental job anymore. Instead, many positions in lots of companies in a wide variety of industries can qualify as environmental jobs. Of course, one of the most popular environmental job categories is to work for a company that works to help the environment. This could be a company that’s working on alternative fuel sources, one that inspects other companies to make sure they’re not harming the environment, or even working for a company that helps other companies become more green. These jobs are obviously environmental jobs, and make a big impact on the eco-friendly trend in society. A slightly newer position but one that is still obviously an environmental job is an environmental engineer. These people evaluate and resolve problems with the environment. In many cases, environmental engineers look at a company’s impact on the environment, and help determine how that company can operate with a smaller impact. In other cases, environmental engineers work with environmental authorities to ensure that companies or organizations who are violating laws are brought to justice. This isn’t the only option, however. Many companies who want to go green look to hire experts in green living to help develop and implement eco-friendly policies for them. The titles of these positions differ depending on the company, but the basic job description is the same. Essentially, you work for the company, evaluate their policies, then help make changes so they can be a green company. Some of these positions may be short-term, while others may be a permanent position. You don’t have to necessarily have a green degree to have an environmental job, though. Even companies who are focused on the environment need “traditional” employees in their companies. Information technology specialists, accountants, and administrative assistants, for example, are all positions that can be found in green companies. These positions don’t necessarily need a green degree, but just a passion for helping the environment. If you do want to go the more traditional route, though, there are outdoors jobs for you. Working in a park or nature reserve, researching and studying wildlife, and cleaning up the environment are jobs that still exist. So don’t think you have to have an office job to help the environment! Having an environmental job doesn’t mean the same thing it used to mean. But at the core, the job is still the same. People with environmental jobs work to keep the world beautiful, and help companies to be aware of the impact they have on the ecosystem. And no matter what shape your specific career takes, you can work to make a difference.
