It hasn’t mattered if he were a Democrat or a Republican, or what the political make-up of the legislature, what the Governor wants he gets. Mike Beebe has never had strong opposition in any election. He is the golden boy of Arkansas politics. Anytime I’ve asked his spokesperson, Matt Decample about Beebe’s strategy, he always answers in terms of “public perception” or the next election cycle. Never about larger, philosophical themes. When Beebe talks, everything is framed in legal terms. He is the master of the CYA (cover your ass). He understands the law, but he operates like a clever attorney instead of a wise judge. He has the power to be judge and jury to achieve a legacy as Arkansas Governor. Right now his legacy is allowing natural gas companies to run roughshod over our state. This destructive industry was granted exemption from the Safe Drinking Water Act by the Cheney/Haliburton administration under the pretense of national security. A large part of these natural gas “assets” that we so desperately needed are now under the control of an Australian firm with a horrible environmental track record. The classic bait and switch. Beebe lauds jobs from the Fayetteville Shale. Environmental stewardship is a job too. Tourism guide is a job. Organic farmer is a job. Fish hatcheries have jobs. Environmental jobs last a lifetime.
